The History of INFINITI

By the time the “Horizon Task Force” formed in 1985, Nissan was already a world-class automaker and respected in America. Their goal was visionary: create a high-performance luxury division of Nissan. With more than one person leading this elite team, the INFINITI brand was eventually born. It’s a pure luxury brand division of Nissan with over 30 years of legendary models behind it.

INFINITI Starts Strong and Stays Strong

The first INFINITI models were introduced in America in 1989: the M30 coupe and Q45 sedan. It was a huge debut that captured all the finer things of the brand. In the 1990s, INFINITI focused more on raw power and eventually introduced the VQ series of V6 engines. It was highly regarded as one of the best engines in the world for over a decade.

What set INFINITI apart and allowed it to grow as a brand was a focus on “complete” customer service and an obsession with giving drivers what they wanted. Everything in an INFINITI vehicle is built around the driver’s needs and makes for an interior that flows correctly. When the driver can drive better, the passengers can enjoy the ride more. By 2002, INFINITI vehicles had voice recognition, making every driver’s life easier. They were at the forefront of intelligent driver-centric design.

INFINITI was also one of the first automakers to add standard driver-assist features like Lane Departure Warning (2004) and Blind Spot Intervention (2010). While these safety features are commonplace today, they weren’t in 2004 and 2010. Some models don’t even come with standard Blind Spot Intervention to this day, so seeing it appear so early in INFINITI’s history indicates their drive to make automobiles safer.

INFINITI models like the QX80, Q50, and QX50 have helped the brand maintain its popularity over the past two decades. People turn to these vehicles when they want something luxurious outside the mainstream. INFINITI’s history is composed of men who envisioned a better way to make automobiles and a better way to help people enjoy them. That legacy continues to grow today.
