Why You Should Buy a Used Car from a Dealer
When buying a used car, your options are typically two-fold: visit a dealership, or buy a used car from a private seller or party. If you’re ready to take the next step in the car buying process, you should consider buying a used car from a dealer.
1. A dealer is there to help you. A dealer handles paperwork linked to ownership, title transfer, and registration. Dealers will discuss financing options if you’re looking to go that route. If you choose to buy a car from a private seller, you’re on your own with paperwork you might be unfamiliar with.
2. Get a feel for the car. With a test drive, you’ll get a feel for how the vehicle performs. You can ask for the car’s maintenance records from the dealer to get a full history of what’s happened with the car. With a private seller, it might be more difficult to find out what the car’s been through, and communication may not be as fluid, which can delay the process. Even if you’ve seen pictures and talked to somebody about a car, you should always see it for yourself and take it for a test drive before deciding.
3. A better-maintained vehicle. There might be a warranty offered by a dealership, and many dealers carry certified pre-owned vehicles. This means the car has gone through an official inspection and repairs have been done properly if any issues had to be solved. A private party won’t offer warranties. You may want to ask to take the vehicle to a service center yourself to have it looked at by a maintenance professional before moving forward with the purchase.
